“The mystics of the world’s religions have contacted the divine spark, describing it as the seed of divinity within. In the Hindu tradition, the Upanishad speaks of ‘the light of the spirit’ that is concealed in the ‘secret high place of the heart’ of all beings.
Mystic Meister Eckhart, a 1300 German Catholic theologian, taught of the divine spark. He said, ‘God’s seed is within us.’ There is a part of us, says Eckhart, that ‘remains eternally in the Spirit and is divine … Here God glows and flames without ceasing.’
Jesus spoke of entering the secret chamber of the heart when He said: ‘When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.’
When I was a little girl I kept wondering: ‘What kind of closets did the disciples go into? Did people have closets in those days? You can’t go into a closet — there’s not enough air in there! What in the world is Jesus talking about?’ Later on, I realized that going into your closet to pray is going into another dimension of consciousness. It’s entering into the heart and closing the door on the outside world.”
