“To live in the Present moment requires us to be focused on the Here and Now, instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past.
When you aren’t living in the now, you are most likely living in the past, by looking at a person from your past event that you wish you had done differently or remembering something you want to hold onto. Or you are in the future, projecting your hopes or your fears.
Many of us spend a majority of our lives either reflecting on the past or projecting into the future. We need to learn to break through our patterns and reactions so that we can be in charge of our responses.
We would all like to be in control of our lives. However, there are always situations, events, and people who can interfere with our sense
of ‘being.’ Usually, someone or something triggers us and we unconsciously react to what we feel has happened to us. We may feel amazing one moment and be triggered into a reaction the next. Sometimes it is our own ego that triggers our unconscious reaction, by bringing up a past memory or a future worry.
One way to be in the present moment is by noticing your surroundings. How often do you take time out of your day to actually look around and see what’s going on? When was the last time you sat down,
closed your eyes, took a deep breath, and just looked at everything around you?
Take this opportunity right now: close both of your eyes and take a deep breath, then open them and really take in where you are. Notice the walls, the lights, and the items near you. When you stop to look at your surroundings and take in everything around you, it’s easier to live in the present moment.
Better yet, go outside. Pay attention to the sounds of the birds. Listen for their small chirps and watch for movement in the tree branches. In nature is where you will find the most authentic moment-to-moment awareness of life.
Then enjoy your place in creation. It is your opportunity to be alive in each breath of your existence.
As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out of present-moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love — even the most simple action.”
